Vyaz is a type of ancient decorative Cyrillic lettering, in which letters are linked into a continuous ornament. It first appeared in South Slavic monuments in the 13th century.
Vyaz has a double essence: graphic and decorative. The direct task of ligature is the rational placement of text in the space saving, using various methods of compact arrangement of letters. Vyaz, as a means of decorating the text, should be framed in a single artistic style of the work. Ligature elements are combined with purely ornamental arabesque motifs. The voids in the ligature string are usually filled with decorations.
