More Than Borsch Cookbook

More Than Borsch is packed full of exciting content for lovers of knowledge and food:

Russian and Ukrainian History
To help lend context to the food, start with our concise, approachable, yet thorough history of both the countries and the cuisine, tracing the origin of the region from an 8th century Viking layover to an expanse which incorporates 11 time zones.

More than 100 classic dishes that cover over a thousand years of Russian and Ukrainian culinary history and represent the very core of the cuisine, enhanced by factoids and tidbits, humor and quirky, original illustrations.

Slavic literature, from folk tales every child knows by heart to Chekhov’s paean to blini to contemporary authors using food as a symbol to rail against the system.

Plenty of rich, full-color reproductions of famous paintings, illustrators, and photos of monuments to food. There are even a couple of our own illustrations in there 😉

I love collecting cookbooks, not only for the recipes, but also for the interesting stories and bits of history they often come with. More Than Borsch really delivers in this department! As an immigrant from the former USSR, I’m very familiar with the foods of my childhood, but I was blown away by the history of the cuisine from both Russia and Ukraine and the specific bits of information on my beloved dishes. I appreciated the focus on Soviet foods, but there are also plenty of dishes that go further back than that. The writing style is light and witty in the historical and literature sections, and the recipes themselves are concise and easy to understand. Simply put, this book will make a great addition to any foodie’s collection, offers engaging content, and most importantly has mouth watering recipes that you can make today!

So happy to have received my copy of this book! While not of Russian or Ukrainian descent, I am a first-generation American and this book feels like a warm hug from one to another. Can’t wait to start cooking with it!

This book is so much more than just a cookbook! I love the history, imagery, as well as beautiful illustrations drawn by the authors. All of the recipes look so warm and comforting & easy to follow. I can’t wait to start cooking with it!

This book is wonderful! I am reading it after I read a couple of other Russian cookbooks. This one has so much more information. I like the short tour of Russian history. I love the reproductions of Russian art. I like the photos of quintessential food. And I really appreciate that, while Russian history and food history is treated respectfully, it is not romanticized — no gushing over aristocratic dishes and traditions while we all know that serfs and workers were barely getting by. A huge Bol’shoe spasibo to the authors for a real labor of love
