Ladybug, in Russian – God’s Little Cow (божья коровка)
This little bug is very important in folklore, not only in Slavic, but also in many other cultures; and it is also significant that the believes are very similar everywhere. Ladybugs are the oldest symbol of happiness, good luck and good news, a symbol of respect, grace, kindness, forgiveness and a symbol of divination.
In Slavic mythology, it was believed that the ladybug lives in heaven and only from time to time descends from heaven in order to convey God’s will to people, hence its name. In no case should this insect be killed so as not to anger God. It is believed that the ladybug was previously called “God’s blood”, since the back of this insect resembles a drop of blood.
To these days various poems, spells and lamentations have been preserved, where the ladybug acts as a creature capable of flying to God and transmitting people’s requests to him.
